Finding protection
Nathan eventually found himself in Saint's Crossing, staying in the Strawberry Welcome Center for a while to develop his new persona. From there, he gathered supplies, bought a horse he named Blitz, and wandered all around the Crossing, looking to see who he might meet. As he approached Blackwater, he was greeted and reversed robbed by Claire MacCabe, giving him a few dollars and a cattleman's revolver. After of few days of hunting and drinking, he happened upon Walter Cross in Valentine. After introducing himself, he explained that he was looking for work and that he was willing to do most anything. Intrigued, Cross told his right-hand man, Douglas, to give him the test. After testing his resolve, Cross gave sent him on a mission: To bring him a member of the Black Powder Gang, whether by infiltration or force. Along his investigation, he met many new people in the Crossing. In a performance at the Blackwater theater, he ran into outlaw, David Parker, who after the show was chastised by many civilians and lawmen outside the theater. Parker defended his actions as the only way to save the people of Armadillo from the cholera outbreak and walked away, leaving an impression of a noble outlaw on Nathan. Later in the day, Nathan ran into David outside the Valentine bank, praising and admiring him for his cause to which David gave him a piece of advice that Nathan would keep for the rest his life: "There are wolves in sheep's clothing everywhere."
Nathan continued his investigation of the Black Powder Gang for his first week in the Crossing. Unfortunately, the operation fell through when the Black Powder Gang was killed by law enforcement officers after robbing the Valentine bank. Although initially discouraged, Nathan continued seeking work with Cross Co., taking part in one of their moonshine operations. The money he gained from that job allowed him to purchase an amber champagne Missouri Foxtrotter that he named Percy.
