She was raised and worked at the boarding house that took in the towns abandoned and orphaned children. She made a close connection with two other orphans - Margaret and Joe as their similarity in age allowed them to spend most of their time together. Once nearing age 12, Margaret and Mei with the help of Joe fled the town heading northwest.
Northern California
Mei, Margaret, and Joe settled in Tahoe City for several years where Mei began picking up skills for sewing reparing fishing nets and clothing. An incident forced the three to moving further west to San Francisco where Mei was taught to read and write. A falling out with the foster siblings triggered the three going their separate ways. This eventually led Mei to striking out east where she would eventually settle in The Crossing.

Character
Personality
Mei is an kind-hearted, gentle, compassionate young woman who sees the good in everyone she meets and is willing to help most people as long as they don't pose a danger to those she cares about. Despite the hardships faced at a very young age she does her best to have a smile on her face, remaining positive, while being hardworking and independent. Mei is also incredibly patient, emotionally intelligent and insightful when it comes to people's feelings, and shows glimpses of wisdom from time to time. She is a very nurturing young woman with unconditional love and immense empathy who is willing to help people work through their traumas and emotional problems without expecting anything in return.
Mei’s self-sacrificing kindness and tendency to put other's needs before her own has caused her to neglect herself to the point of misery, and she obsessively sidelines her own needs and problems; ostensibly because she wants to take care of her friends, but really because she can’t face her own trauma. Behind her cheerful personality, she has serious self-esteem issues and a tendency to hide her true feelings of worry, fear, and hurt, and instead projects her usual cheerful exterior to give emotional support to the people around her and to not make them think lesser of her.
Mei has a deep-rooted fear of being abandoned, and constantly lives in fear of her loved ones disappearing and leaving her alone.
