History

Early Life

Bonnie Helen Gray was born on October 1st 1880, along with her younger twin brother Houston Gray, to Julian Gray II and his wife Helen Adler in Rhodes. She has two older brothers, Julian "July" III and Alistair II, as well as a younger half-brother, August. Bonnie's great-great-grandparents Malcolm and Elspeth were among the first immigrants to settle in the area of Lemoyne that would later become Rhodes, and their daughter (and Bonnie's great-grandmother) Mhairi was one of the first children to be born in the town.

Bonnie and her brothers were raised at Caliga Hall alongside other members of their extended family. The success of the family business allowed them to live a luxurious lifestyle and the children never wanted for anything. July was groomed to take over the business and especially doted on, and July and Alistair were often whisked away by their father to learn at his side, but Bonnie and Houston were not seen to have as much potential and were set aside. Instead they became schooled in the shadier dealings of the family, namely distilling and running moonshine. A quiet child, Bonnie spent most of her days following Houston and helping him in whatever he wanted to do while protecting him from the slights of other children.

In May 1891, following the mysterious death of twelve-year-old Arthur Braithwaite, Bonnie was sent to Edinburgh Academy for Wayward Girls. The students were treated cruelly by the staff and the students treated each other cruelly, and Bonnie was often the one at the bottom of the hierarchy. She isolated herself when she could and spent this time teaching herself to play the violin. She left at eighteen and lived for a time in her extended family's estate in the village of Houston, in Scotland's lowlands.

While in Edinburgh Bonnie would receive letters from the family a few times a year to keep her up-to-date with the goings-on of the clan and the business. Her grandfather Julian I died a year after she was sent away, with her father inheriting control of the family business. Unbeknownst to her, her parents completely mismanaged the business and preferred to spend the money on frivolous extravagances. The money finally ran out at the turn of the century, so Julian II and Helen took what little they had left and disappeared.

In August 1900, in an attempt to revive the business and restore the family name, July summoned Bonnie and all their other relatives back to the Crossing; she arrived in late November.

Events in Saint's Crossing

Bonnie spent most of her time assisting her brothers, distilling and running shine, and occasionally going to work for other gangs as hired security. She worked for a short while in the Rhodes Parlor House as a violinist. While not particularly prone to violence, Bonnie was not afraid to use force to get the job done.

On January 26, 1901, Houston was found dead in the Saint Denis medical office, murdered by The Cut after a deal went sour. At this time most of the Grays had either gotten State employment, been imprisoned or simply moved on from the Crossing. July and Bonnie, the only two left, fled Caliga Hall to New Austin where they joined up with Del Lobos, under La Niña. While not close, they were the first people Bonnie had begun to even consider calling friends. During this time she began to learn field medicine and developed a keen interest, while continuing to outsource her services to the Pale Panthers and Clyde Davis, among other smaller gangs.

Following the Battle of Fort Mercer July was arrested and sent to Sisika. Bonnie spent at least the following three months isolating herself in a shack in New Austin.

In July 1901 Bonnie, after a long night of drinking, woke up in the Blackwater tailors office while Deputy Cait McAlister was changing. Bonnie developed a fascination with the deputy and later handed herself in for moonshining and theft. The two developed a close friendship and Cait would later encourage Bonnie to follow her passion and study medicine.

In December 1901 Bonnie was abducted from Blackwater by a man named Revenant Wright, who forced her to partake in a ritual intended to summon the apocalypse. He stabbed her and left her on the docks at Quakers Cove. The ordeal damaged the nerves in Bonnie's right hand, forcing her fingers to move abnormally slowly.

Shortly after the incident with Wright Bonnie was accepted into medical school. She joined the SCDH's trainee program and was certified on the first anniversary of her brother's death. She is now experimenting with microscopically-assisted surgeries, focusing on nerve damage and reconstruction.

Character

Personality

Bonnie is a reserved person and prefers to observe rather than partake in conversation. She can be awkward and blunt, which some find charming. She has a crippling fear of abandonment and a strong loyalty to her family, especially her brothers. While she abides by the law she has no problem talking about her criminal past.

Appearance

Bonnie is 5ft2", with pale skin, freckles and blue eyes. She is naturally blonde but now dyes her hair a very pale red. She has a large scar running from her forehead to her cheek after a glass was thrown at her face during a fight as a teen. She favors button-up shirts and wide-brim hats in shades of grays and blues.

Relationships

Trivia

  • Bonnie was born in the Rhodes telegram office.
